An Oregon father is hailed a hero after he was fatally shot trying to stop a purse-snatching outside a northeast Portland grocery store earlier this month.
Jonathan Trent, 47, was leaving the Fred Meyer grocery store at around 3:50 p.m. on Jan. 13 when he witnessed the purse-snatching and tried to intervene.
Two teens, aged 15 and 16, allegedly shot Trent and killed him before he was discovered by a couple leaving the store. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“I speak for everyone at the Police Bureau when I assay our hearts go out to Mr. Trent’s family and friends,” Police Spokesman Mike Benner said.
“He went to the grocery store for a quick errand and should’ve returned home but didn’t.”
Trent leaves behind a son and his mother. He was described as a “ man of warmth, kindness, and joy who brought light to everyone around him.”
