Suspect dead after fatally shooting Houston deputy serving warrant

The suspected killer of a Brazoria County Sheriff’s deputy was killed by police Wednesday evening, Houston authorities said.

56-year-old Robert Lee Davis was accused of shooting Deputy Jesus Jesse Vargas in the head killing him when he approached him in the parking lot of a Dollar General to serve a warrant at 11:30 a.m.

“This afternoon, we lost a local hero in Deputy Sheriff Vargas from the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office,” said Houston Mayor John Whitmire.

A manhunt was launched for Davis who took off from the scene after the shooting. Hours later, Houston Police announced the death of Davis.

  • “A short time ago, the suspect was shot by law enforcement officers behind the businesses near the original shooting scene here on Stella Link. The suspect is deceased,” the department said on X.

    The fallen deputy was a 17-year veteran of the force. He is survived by his wife and three children.

    “We are praying for the officer shot while serving a warrant this morning,” said Harris County Constable Alan Rosen.

    “Please keep this officer and his family in your prayers!!! I have deputies attached to this task force who are out searching for the suspect with our other law enforcement partners!”
