Human remains in ‘various forms of decomposition’ discovered along Utah hiking trail

An investigation is ongoing after a hiker found human remains in “various forms of decomposition” along a popular trail in southwestern Utah over the weekend.

The Washington City Police Department said the remains were discovered Sunday near the Bone Wash Trail and Elephant Arch hiking trails.

“Officers from Washington City Police and Deputies from Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded promptly to the scene and confirmed the presence of human remains in various forms of decomposition, indicating they had been there for an extended period of time,” authorities said.

  • Investigators said the remains belonged to a man but declined to release an identity. Foul play is not suspected in the death.

    “Out of respect for the family, the identity will not be disclosed at this time,” the department added.

    “The case remains active pending the completion of all reports, including finds from the Medical Examiner’s office.”
