An Alabama police officer was killed in the line of duty Monday while directing traffic outside an Irondale church, authorities said.
Lt. Mark Meadows, 60, with the Irondale Police Department died in a crash that occurred at an intersection near the Church of the Highlands at around 7 a.m.
The officer was reportedly struck by a pickup truck. The driver remained at the scene and collaborated with investigators.
“Lt. Mark Meadows was a treasured member of our Irondale family for over 30 years,” Mayor James D. Stewart Jr. said.
“He was a man of few words but always led by example and embodied the heart of a true public servant.”
Police said Meadows was directing the traffic outside the large church campus after morning prayer services.
