Memphis child, 7, critical after accidentally shooting herself

A Memphis girl is clinging to life after she accidentally shot herself Friday, authorities said.

Officers rushed to an accidental injury report in the 2500 block of Elmscourt Drive shortly after 3 p.m.

Once at the scene, the officers found an injured 7-year-old girl lying on a couch in the living room.

  • The girl suffered from a gunshot wound to her upper left thigh. She was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

    The child’s mother told officers she and her daughter were watching TV in a bedroom when the shooting happened.

    Police said the woman believed the weapon was secured underneath the mattress. Officers recovered the weapon underneath the mattress and identified it as a black Taurus 9mm.

    The child’s father was taken into custody at the hospital after admitting that the gun belonged to him.
