A human jawbone was discovered on a Long Island beach earlier this week, officials said.
Two beachgoers walking along the shore at Smith Point County Park in Shirley made the gruesome discovery at around 5 p.m. Monday.
They alerted a park attendant who called the police.
The jawbone was brought to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner for analysis. The office confirmed the bone as human.
“I’ve lived in the area 50 years. I love the area,” a resident said following the disturbing discovery.
“Does it have its ups and downs? I don’t know what area doesn’t. To me, it’s beautiful with good neighbors.”
The Suffolk County Homicide Squad is investigating the finding. Anyone with information is asked to contact them at 631-852-6392.
