Beachgoers find human jawbone on Long Island shore

A human jawbone was discovered on a Long Island beach earlier this week, officials said.

Two beachgoers walking along the shore at Smith Point County Park in Shirley made the gruesome discovery at around 5 p.m. Monday.

They alerted a park attendant who called the police.

  • The jawbone was brought to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner for analysis. The office confirmed the bone as human.

    “I’ve lived in the area 50 years. I love the area,” a resident said following the disturbing discovery.

    “Does it have its ups and downs? I don’t know what area doesn’t. To me, it’s beautiful with good neighbors.”

    The Suffolk County Homicide Squad is investigating the finding. Anyone with information is asked to contact them at 631-852-6392.
