Alabama man, daughter die in house fire after returning to burning structure to rescue pets

An Alabama father and his daughter perished in a house fire early Sunday when they returned to the burning home to rescue their pets.

Georgiana Police said Jimmy Walton, 72, and Tanya Walton, 28, were initially able to escape when the fire erupted at their house in the 1100 block of South Palmer Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

  • However, the pair went back inside the home to try and rescue Tanya’s two dogs, the family said.

    “Unfortunately, they were unable to escape out of the house in time before it collapsed,” relative Malasia Clark said.

    The grieving family revealed that the blaze was triggered by a space heater but the tragic incident is still under the investigation of the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office.
