An Army soldier was charged with murder in connection to the death of a fellow soldier who was found fatally injured at his Fort Irwin National Training Center, California home.
Spc. George Cornejo, 26, was charged with murder over the Oct. 28 killing of Spc. Andrew P. Smith, 20.
Investigators did not reveal a motive or if the two soldiers knew each other.
Cornejo was arrested on Oct. 29 and later transferred to the Naval Consolidated Brig in Miramar, California where he remains.
Smith, who joined the Army in August 2021, was assigned to Fort Irwin, where he served as an utilities equipment preparer with the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment.
The victim left behind a wife and an unborn son.
“Spc. Smith was loved by many and highly regarded amongst the team,” said Commander of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment Kevin Black.
“As we mourn the loss of our teammate, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and fellow troopers.”
