Off-duty Texas deputy working extra job, 7-year-old daughter killed in crash: ‘A very tragic scene’

An off-duty Texas deputy and her 7-year-old daughter were killed in a tragic crash on the Katy Freeway early Friday morning.

Harris County Constable Precinct 5 Deputy Katherine Hutson, 46, was working an extra job controlling traffic for a road construction convoy when the crash occurred at around 3:45 a.m.

Hutson and her daughter were in a sedan stationary on the shoulder when an impaired 23-year-old man driving a Mazda crashed into them from behind.

  • “He remained on scene. He is a young adult male, and he is cooperating with the investigation,” said Assistant Police Chief Adrian Rodriguez.

    Hutson, an 18-year veteran of Precinct 5, and her daughter, a second-grader at Turlington Elementary School, died in the crash.

    “I do ask Houstonians to please pray for these families, and especially with the holidays coming up, this is a very tragic scene that we have,” Rodriguez said.
