A teacher and a student were sent to a hospital after a science experiment went wrong at a Connecticut high school.
The Berlin Fire Department responded to Berlin High School after a malfunction in the setup of an experiment involving nitric acid and copper resulted in a nitrogen dioxide gas leak.
In high concentrations, nitrogen dioxide can cause irritation of the eyes and throat, dizziness, and even the loss of consciousness.
The building was immediately evacuated and two people were rushed to a nearby hospital after experiencing symptoms.
“No one really knew whether it was a drill or not. We later found out while we were outside, that one of the gas things that weren’t supposed to be pulled, got pulled and there was like a gas lead,” said a student.
The incident is being investigated, school officials said.
