2 poll workers among 5 killed in Missouri flash flooding

Two election poll workers were among five victims killed in flash flooding early Tuesday in Wright County, Missouri.

Torrential rains of up to 8 inches fell in some areas of the state within two days causing widespread flooding and several drowning incidents and killing at least five people.

An elderly couple, aged 70 and 73, were in a vehicle that was swept away by flooding at Beaver Creek at about 4:30 a.m.

The Manes, Missouri couple were poll workers. Their bodies were recovered more than four hours later.

“This is a tragic loss for Wright County,” said County Clerk Loni Pedersen.

“They were dedicated citizens who valued fair and honest elections.”

Two other people were found dead in a submerged SUV near Gravois Creek and a 66-year-old man was recovered from a car that was swept off an Ironton bridge.
