An 8-year-old New Mexico girl is clinging to life after she was shot in the head by her older brother while they got ready for school early Tuesday.
Clayton Police responded to a home at around 7:30 a.m. over reports of a shooting.
The girl was found with a gunshot wound in the head and rushed to an area hospital before being airlifted to another hospital in Texas.
Her condition was listed as critical as of Wednesday afternoon.
Detectives learned the girl’s 17-year-old Gio Blan pointed a gun at his sister and pulled the trigger believing the weapon was unloaded.
After the shooting, the teen dissembled the gun and discarded it in a dumpster.
State police recovered the gun from the dumpster. They said the weapon didn’t belong to anyone at the family home.
The brother was taken into custody and booked into the San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center on aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, negligent use of a deadly weapon, and tampering with evidence.
