Indiana man kills wife with hammer; burns body after she filed for divorce

An Indiana man has allegedly admitted to slaughtering his estranged wife last week after she filed for divorce.

Daniel Keith Flaherty, 42, called 911 on Thursday night to report 36-year-old Kayla Flaherty missing.

He told detectives his wife left for her mother’s home but never made it.

  • Police arrested Flaherty the next day and he admitted during questioning that he killed Kayla with a hammer Thursday morning.

    He then put Kayla’s body in their 2019 Toyota Highlander, set the car on fire, and rigged it “to drive into the Wabash River.”

    The burned SUV was found in the river with human remains inside it at the location Flaherty indicated.

    “A search of the vehicle on October 6th, 2024 located the remnants of Kayla Flaherty’s cell phone consistent with statements made by Daniel Flaherty as well as Kayla Flaherty’s identifying documents and property.”
