Police in New Haven, Connecticut are investigating after officers fatally shot a man during questioning late Thursday.

The 36-year-old man reportedly displayed a gun during an investigation by a violent crime task force at a car wash.

Two officers opened fire killing the man, who has not been publicly identified.

Police Chief Karl Jacobson said the man was known to local enforcement for years. His brother had previously been arrested.

Jacobson said he had tried talking with both brothers as part of a violence prevention program to steer them away from crime.

“We told them we want you safe, alive, and out of jail,” Jacobson said.

“It’s tragic, and the officers are deeply upset too. The officers don’t want to do something like this.”

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave as it is protocol.
