WV University football player fatally shot during home invasion

A 21-year-old West Virginia college football player was shot and killed late Wednesday during a home invasion, police in Charleston said.

Jyilek Harrington of Charlotte, North Carolina was found suffering gunshot wounds in the 700 block of Regency Drive when officers responded to reports of a disturbance.

The West Virginia University senior succumbed to his injuries despite all life-saving measures provided at the scene.

    Harrington had just transferred to the university this year and was playing as an inside linebacker on the football team.

    “Jyilek was a senior member of the Yellow Jacket football team. He was an outstanding student-athlete and was a leader not only on our campus but in our community,” university President Ericke Cage said.

    “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jyilek’s family as they mourn the loss of this incredible young man.”
