2 workers repairing damaged silo die after getting trapped inside; overtaken by toxic gas

Two workers died over the weekend after they became trapped inside an 80-foot silo while repairing its damaged roof.

The tragic incident occurred near Volga, South Dakota at around 11:25 a.m. Saturday.

Brookings County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene after learning that two workers became trapped inside the silage silo while repairing a damaged roof.

  • It is believed the two workers were overtaken by toxic gas. They were both deceased when extricated from the silo.

    Authorities later identified the workers as 41-year-old Randi Vandekieft, of Warner Robins, Georgia, and 51-year-old Larry Dalzell, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

    The victims were workers of Heartland Tank, Inc. The incident is being investigated.
