Kentucky coal miner dies while working in West Virginia

A Kentucky man was killed Friday night while working in a West Virginia coal mine, Gov. Jim Justice said.

33-year-old Gary Chapman was fatally injured at the Mountaineer II Mine near Sharples, according to the Republican Governor.

  • “When we lose a miner, it’s not just a loss for the community, but a loss for the entire State of West Virginia,” Justice said.

    “Mr. Chapman’s loss is a powerful reminder that we should always have a deep gratitude for every one of our coal miners. They are the ones who keep our nation running.”

    At least eight coal miners have died on the job in the US this year. Four of the fatalities occurred in West Virginia.
