Authorities in Indonesia are investigating the tragic demise of a grandfather whose body was ripped in half and devoured by a crocodile on August 29.

M Yunus, 68, did not return home after leaving for a dip in the river just a few meters away from his residence.

“Suspecting that her husband had drowned, the victim’s wife then informed her son who lives in Langsa,” Ranto Peureulak Police said.

Yunus’ clothes and phone were all that rescuers found at first; they launched a search for the man that lasted for several hours before they located half of his body, caught in a branch along the river.

Locals reported spotting a crocodile along the riverbank two days after the tragedy.

Believing it was the same reptile that devoured the poor man, the farmers approached the animal and discovered it was dead.

“We thought it was the crocodile that ate Yunus, so we cut it open but we found no human body parts inside,” one said.

“People from Bhom Lama and Paya Meuligo villages now feel worried and reluctant to carry out their activities as usual around the river.”
