An Indiana man left to care for his girlfriend’s baby daughter ended up shaking her to death last month, authorities said.
Jesse A. Sartin brought the 21-month-old girl to St. Elizabeth Hospital Dearborn on July 24 telling nurses she was harmed in an accident.
The baby suffered from brain swelling and doctors removed part of her skull, determining that she was unlikely to survive the injuries.
They also noted that the baby’s injuries were inconsistent with a fall, as Sartin initially claimed, but with shaking.
The baby died On Thursday. Sartin eventually admitted to shaking her for about 20 seconds after she became “aggressive” and started “flailing her arms not wanting to get out of the bathtub” while he was bathing her.
The child’s mother was reportedly at work when the abuse occurred. Sartin was arrested Friday on charges of murder and aggravated battery resulting in death.
