Lightning strike sends 7 youth Utah hikers to hospitals

A lighting strike hit close to a group of youth hiking in Utah sending seven members to area hospitals Thursday afternoon.

The victims were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hiking in eastern Sevier County when the lightning hit at around 1:45 p.m.

“Approximately 50 youths felt the shock of the lightning,” said Sheriff Nathan Curtis said.

    Two people were in serious condition and were flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in Lehi, Utah to receive treatment.

    The five others were taken to Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield and Gunnison Valley Hospital in Gunnison by ambulances.

    Curtis said the remaining hikers were sent home after the incident.
