Atlanta news, Georgia news.

Authorities in Atlanta have arrested the suspect who hijacked a bus with 17 passengers onboard, fatally shot a passenger, and led police into a multi-county speed chase Tuesday evening.

The pursuit started in Atlanta where 39-year-old Joseph Grier reportedly hijacked a Gwinnett County, Georgia transit bus at 45 Ivan Allen Junior Boulevard NE.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said that a person was shot at that location. They later died from their injuries.

A police chase ensued through Gwinnett County and DeKalb County with the bus hitting multiple vehicles and driving the wrong way on State Route 8.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens thanked the agencies that contributed to solving the chaotic situation and rescued hostages who had to endure a “frightening journey.”

“It’s unfortunate that today, in two different instances, I am coming before the media with Chief Schierbaum talking about acts of gun violence in our region, in our city, and

I’m thankful for the partnerships that we have here,” Dickens said.

“Let me be clear, we’re talking about gun violence that is a result of too many people having guns in their hands.”
