A Tennessee high school student died Friday evening after he collapsed during a basketball game, officials said.
17-year-old Rossview High School student Cam Ward was playing a pickup basketball game with his teammates at around 6 p.m.
Coach Johnny Jackson said that the teen collapsed as he jogged back on defense. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“When they got Cam out of the ambulance, they were still working on him. They did all they could to revive him,” Jackson said.
Ward’s official cause of death was not immediately disclosed. His brother has set up a fundraising page to help cover medical bills and funeral charges.
“Bless your family. Our family loved watching Cam play. Always so much passion. Forever #5,” a mourner wrote.
“Heaven has gained a superstar,” another added.
