An hours-long standoff in Sparks, Nevada ended with the death of the suspect after he shot two officers and a deputy on Friday.
Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth in a Saturday press conference that the suspect first opened fire at a Sparks Police officer during a traffic stop at around 1:40 p.m.
The suspect then fled the scene before crashing and abandoning the vehicle; he then tried to break into several homes before barricading himself inside an elderly woman’s residence.
The woman was safely removed from the home as the suspect started firing shots from inside, striking a Washoe County deputy and a second Spars police officer.
Crawforth said the suspect left that home for another residence, forcing the elderly resident out.
A SWAT and negotiator team arrived at the scene in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, but the suspect kept firing shots at the officers surrounding his hideout.
Police gained entry to the home at 10 p.m. and found the subject dead at the scene.
Residents of the area were asked to shelter in place for several hours; the officers and deputy received treatment and have since been released from the hospital.
