A North Carolina toddler died Saturday night after he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle while wandering alone outside of his home.
Catawba County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an accident involving an unsupervised child on Buffalo Shoals Road in Maiden at around 7:30 p.m.
The 2-year-old was taken to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. No charges were filed against the driver.
Authorities are now investigating how and why the boy was wandering alone on the road at the time of the incident.
A resident of the neighborhood noted that multiple accidents involving animals had occurred on that stretch of the road due to bad visibility at night.
Following the tragedy, she hoped lights would be added to the area.
“Definitely more lights. Especially right here, because at night, this whole spot is so black and you can’t see nothing.”
