Arrest made in murder of beloved DC photographer who went missing on Labor Day weekend

A suspect was arrested in connection with the death of a Washington D.C. photograph who vanished in Maryland on Labor Day weekend.

On Thursday, Maryland authorities announced the arrest of 47-year-old Brandon R. Holbrook over the disappearance and killing of 51-year-old Joseph Anthony Shymanski.

Shymanski, a father of two, was a well-known photographer who sold his work at a weekly outdoor Capitol Hill market.

  • Authorities searched the victim’s home in Huntingtown and determined that foul play was involved in the man’s disappearance before naming the Pennsylvania resident as a suspect in the case.

    Holbrook was arrested in Reedsville and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and first-degree assault.

    Human remains believed to be Shymanski’s were located on Thursday. An official identification is pending.

    “In the wake of this tragic case, our condolences go out to the family of Mr. Joseph Shymanski, especially his children. Our thoughts remain with them at this very difficult time,” the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post.
