Death of San Antonio airport employee deemed 'suicide' after man jumped into running plane engine

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death of a 27-year-old San Antonio airport worker last week a “suicide”.

David Renner jumped into the running engine of a Delta plane on Friday at 10:25 p.m. as the flight was taxiing into a gate.

Renner died from fatal blunt and sharp force injuries. The National Transportation Board said on Monday there will not be an investigation into the death after the medical examiner's office's findings.

  • “The NTSB will not be opening an investigation into this event. There were no operational safety issues with either the airplane or the airport,” said a spokesperson.

    Renner was employed by Unifi Aviation. Among his responsibilities, were wheelchair assistance, catering provisions, and security.

    “Unifi Aviation is deeply saddened by the loss of our employee at San Antonio International Airport during a tragic incident,” the company said.

    “Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and we will remain focused on supporting our employees on the ground and ensuring they are being taken care of during this time.”
