A New Mexico inmate died Friday after he sustained fatal wounds during an escape attempt and altercation with officers earlier this week.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's Deputy Angelina Navarro said that the inmate was injured on Monday at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque.

Sanchez was arrested on June 8 after being caught driving a stolen SUV; the following day, prosecutors decided to dismiss charges against him due to “insufficient evidence.”

The late inmate was set to be released Monday but instead, he was admitted to the hospital with life-threatening wounds that same day.
