A 60-year-old Texas firefighter was fatally struck on a road while battling a vehicle fire Tuesday, authorities said.
Edward Hykel was extinguishing the flames on Interstate 35 along with members of the West Fire Department when the driver of a tractor-trailer ignored traffic control devices and rammed into the fire truck killing Hykel and wounding two troopers.

The fallen firefighter volunteered for the fire department and the Public Works Department for 16 years.
“He was a valuable asset to the city of West and was a great employee,” West Mayor Tommy Muska said of the victim.
“I can't say enough about his attitude about work and life. He just had a get-it-done attitude.”
