Authorities in Pittsburgh have yet to make an arrest in connection with the shooting that occurred outside Westinghouse Academy Tuesday afternoon.
Three boys and one girl, aged between 15 and 17, were struck by gunshots outside the school shortly after dismissal.
The victims received treatment at the scene before being hospitalized in stable condition.
“We need a lot of change here in Homewood. Drastically,” a resident said following the incident. “Put these guns down. Pick up a book.”
Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey echoed the same view in a lengthy statement he issued in the wake of the shooting.
“Westinghouse is a community filled with scholars and champions, and I want everyone to know and celebrate their accomplishments, and not just focus on the violence we saw today.”
“Our city deserves to have lasting peace and that means we have to work to find ways to resolve our conflicts that don't involve using guns and bullets. We can and must do better for our children and for our future.”
