Young contractor killed in freak accident at Iowa's Adventureland theme park

A freak accident claimed the life of a 20-year-old Illinois man working at Iowa's Adventureland theme park, authorities said.

Zachary Alesky succumbed to his injuries during surgery after he slipped on ice and fell while carrying a steel beam.

The deceased was a member of a contract team building the Flying Viking rollercoaster at the Altoona amusement park.

Alesky's family said that when he fell, the steel beam crushed down on his chest. First responders were able to revive him at the scene but he died late at a hospital.

  • “Officers were called to a medical of a 20-year-old male, of Illinois, who fell on the ice & was not breathing,” local police said in a statement.

    “There is currently nothing suspicious about the death. This is an open investigation, pending an autopsy.”

    According to reports, Alesky was the son-in-law of the owner of the local company SkyHigh Coaster which was contracted by the park to build the rollercoaster.

    “We are saddened by this tragic accident involving a contractor performing work at Adventureland Resort and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and coworkers,” Adventureland's owner, Palace Entertainment, said.

    The Iowa OSHA is investigating the accident.
