Authorities in DeLand, Florida are investigating a fatal skydiving incident when an individual’s parachute “failed to open” killing him on Monday.
DeLand Police Department Spokesperson Ava Hanner said that the incident occurred at around 11:45 a.m. at DeLand Municipal Airport.

The male victim, who was not identified, perished at the scene “following a parachute malfunction and hard landing.”
Pictures from the scene showed emergency responders and a plane with propellers on the tarmac of DeLand Municipal Airport.
“DeLand PD is currently on scene at the DeLand Airport. A male skydiver is deceased following a parachute malfunction and hard landing,” the department said on Twitter.
