6 wounded in shooting at Oakland school: ‘It shocks the soul’

Six adults were reported wounded Wednesday following a shooting at a Northern California school.

Police said that at around 1:45 p.m., gunfire erupted in the 8200 block of Fontaine Street where is located a building shared by multiple schools.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf specified that the shooting occurred at Sojourner Truth School while City Council Member Treva Raid revealed that the incident was related to “group and gang violence.”

“Today’s gun violence at Sojourner Truth school shocks the soul,” the Mayor said on Twitter. “Our schools are sanctuaries for our children.”

Three victims were listed in critical condition. The Oakland Unified School District noted that there were no students at the site of the incident.

“There was an incident today at the King Estate campus on Fontaine Street, which houses the co-located Rudsdale Continuation and Newcomer high schools, BayTech Charter School, and the headquarters of Sojourner Truth Independent Study, which has no students at the site,” the district said.

Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Ray Kelly said that the shooting was “probably targeted.”
