Brittney Griner sentenced to 9 years in Russian court; Biden calls for her immediate release

President Joe Biden condemned Thursday Russians for sentencing Britteny Griner to nine years in jail for cannabis possession and smuggling.

“Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully detaining Brittney,” Biden said.

    Last week, it was revealed that the Biden administration has tried to free Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan in exchange for Merchant of Death Viktor Bout.

    “My administration will continue to work tirelessly and pursue every possible avenue to bring Brittney and Paul Whelan home safely as soon as possible,” Biden added.
