Amtrak derails in Mendon, Missouri killing 4, wounding about 150 others

Four people were confirmed dead and about 150 others injured when a Southwest Chief Train carrying 287 people derailed in Mendon, Missouri after crashing into a dump truck at around 1 p.m. Monday.

Authorities said that among the victims were two passengers and the dump truck driver; photos from the scene showed seven overturned carts on the side of the tracks.

“Amtrak is working with local authorities to make sure those who are injured get medical care and everyone else receives services and transportation,” an Amtrak official said.

    Authorities said that the train was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago. The crash occurred at an “uncontrolled crossing” on a gravel road deprived of lights and electronic controls.

    “All of sudden, the car that we were on was over, and everyone was flying everywhere,” a survivor said. “Seats were coming apart. Bags were going everywhere. And then, after it stopped, you could smell the fumes and so people started panicking, thinking it was going to catch fire, so we tried to get out as quick as possible.”
