Prisoner who killed toddler girl when he was teen killed by group of inmates at North Carolina jail

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said Tuesday that a prisoner at the Bertie Correction Institution in Windsor had been murdered by a group of fellow inmates.

Semajs Short, 24, was pronounced dead at around 2:37 p.m. Tuesday after being attacked by a group of other inmates in a housing area of the facility, the NCDPS said in a statement.

“Prisons first responders performed life-saving measures until local paramedics arrived and also worked to resuscitate the offender.”

  • “Three other offenders were injured during the group assault and were taken to an outside medical facility for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries,” the statement added.

    The incident is being investigated by the Windsor Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation.

    Short had pleaded guilty to the slaying of a 2-year-old girl back in 2017. He was 17 years old at the time of the crime.
