A 2-year-old Alabama toddler was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after shooting themselves using a relative’s gun Tuesday morning.
The incident took place at a Hueytown home where the child found the unsecured gun and fired a fatal shot shortly after 11:30 a.m.
“Hueytown Police and Fire responded to the 1400 block of 26th Avenue on a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” a police spokesperson said.
“Officers and medical personnel arrived to find a two-year-old child shot. Hueytown Fire immediately began attempting life-saving efforts.”
“The child was transported to Children’s Hospital by ambulance where they were ultimately pronounced deceased. Initial investigation shows that the child found a family member’s weapon and discharged it.”
The official added: “This case is currently under investigation by our detectives and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time.”
