A Pennsylvania boy had passed away last May while spending time with his father after he accidentally ingested fentanyl, police said.
This week, 36-year-old Van Marcus Redding was hit with involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and drug charges in connection with the 4-year-old’s death.
Prosecutors said that Avant Redding went with his father to a birthday party on May 7 before they purchased fast food at McDonald’s.
But on the way back home, Avant started vomiting and became “unsteady on his feet,” according to his dad’s claims.
As Redding rushed the child to a hospital, he got involved in a crash that further complicated the boy’s condition.
By the time he reached St. Clair hospital, Avant was already dead. Toxicology results showed lethal amounts of fentanyl in the child’s system.
A search of Redding’s residence revealed a baggie of drugs. The man admitted selling the powder from his home.
