Sources close to the investigation into John McAfee’s death told the AP Friday that the tech guru had a suicide note in his pocket when found hanging in a cell Wednesday.
But McAfee’s widow told media outlets that she still did not buy the suicide narrative and that she had spoken with her late husband for hours shortly before his death.
“I blame the U.S. authorities for this tragedy,” Janice McAfee said. “Because of these politically motivated charges against him my husband is now dead.”
“His last words to me were ‘I love you and I will call you in the evening.’ Those words are not words of somebody who is suicidal.”
“He did not deserve to die in a filthy prison like a caged animal,” she added. “All John wanted to do was spend his remaining years fishing and drinking. He had hope that things would work out. We knew that there would be an uphill battle to continue to fight this situation.”
The 75-year-old’s widow described him as a “fighter” who was ready to face the charges against him.
“He would never quit this way. He would never take his own life in this way. I don’t believe he did this and I will get answers. I want answers on how this was able to happen.”
As authorities conducted an autopsy to determine an official cause of death, the billionaire’s family sought to perform an independent autopsy and take legal steps at the end of the investigation.
