Russian authorities announced Saturday that the body of a missing American student was found dead in a forest four days after she vanished.
Following an extensive search for 34-year-old Catherine Serou, her remains were ultimately discovered in the woody region of Nizhny Novgorod where her phone last pinged.
On Tuesday, she sent her mom a last text message, moments before she disappeared: “It says: ‘In a car with a stranger. I hope I’m not being abducted.’”
The mom said that her daughter, who was studying in Moscow, was in a rush to go to a local clinic and may have jumped to an unknown car.
“I think that when she saw that the person wasn’t driving to the clinic, but instead was driving into a forest, she panicked. Her telephone last pinged off a cell tower in that forest.”
Russian Police said that a 44-year-old suspect has been arrested. The man had previously been convicted of serious offenses.
