Guntersville news, Alabama news.

An Alabama triple-murder suspect was found to be carrying a hidden shank while transported to another prison earlier this week.

A jail body scanner uncovered Jimmy O’Neal Spencer’s smuggled weapon as he arrived at Marshall County Jail for a hearing.

The 55-year-old, who had been incarcerated at a maximum-security cell at Kilby Prison since his arrest in 2018, was placed in solitary confinement following the incident.

  • “We all know Spencer’s background,” Sheriff Phil Sims said. “We know he can be a violent person, so it’s very important we find this stuff because if he gets access to this stuff and we don’t know it, he could injure another inmate, injures our corrections officers.”

Spencer stands accused of killing Martha Dell Reliford, 65; Marie Kitchens Martin, 74; and Martin’s great-grandson Colton Ryan Lee, 7, at their Guntersville residences on July 13, 2018.

The victims died of blunt force trauma to the heads and Spencer allegedly stole a consequent amount of cash from both victims’ homes.
