Richmond gunman still at large after opening fire at group of children killing woman, injuring 4 people

The search for the gunman who opened fire at a group of children in Richmond continues after one woman died and at least 4 other victims sustained injuries.

The shooter targeted a group of children outside The Belt Atlantic apartment complex at around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities said that another person fired back at the suspect prompting him to run away but not before killing a woman and critically injuring another and three kids.

  • “It’s just a heinous act that baffles the mind as to why anyone would do this in a quad full of children out enjoying themselves,” Richmond Police Chief Gerald Smith said.

    “One of the hardest things to say is one was a 3-month-old at the time they were shot. The 3-month-old is in serious condition at this time.”

    Smith urged witnesses to come forward and help police apprehend the suspect who remains at large.

    “Someone knows who did this act. They know. There are too many people out there, too many eyes, too many connections for people who live here not to know who did this.”
