A gunman had opened fire early Wednesday morning at a residential building in Riviera Beach, killing a child and seriously wounding his mom as they slept.
Police Chief Nathan Osgood said that at the targeted apartment were also the child’s dad and sibling who were not harmed.
The 7-year-old victim was identified as Dexter Fergusson, aka “Peanut”. He was a student at Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School.
“I am really going to miss him so much,” the wounded mom said adding that her younger son, 5, was left traumatized.
“I don’t think he understands his brother is gone and not coming back. That his best friend is not here anymore.”
The 28-year-old mom was shot several times as did her late son. Both were sleeping at the time of the shooting.
Police said that the previous afternoon, there was a verbal argument outside the home. Investigators are now working to determine whether there was more than one shooter.
