DC authorities have launched an investigation after finding a noose hanging near a Capitol Hill church on Friday.
The DC Metropolitan Police Department said that a rope with a loop at the end was found in a tree at the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church located at 301 A Street SE.
Councilmember Charles Allen described the finding as a “despicable symbol and an act of hate.”
“These types of offenses are taken seriously and are entirely unacceptable,” DC Police said in a statement. “We are currently investigating this as a possible hate crime.”
A church’s representative stated that the “symbol of hatred has no place in its yard, the city or the country” adding that the noose was removed by police.
