Days following horrific riots at the Capitol Building, a veteran Capitol Police officer committed suicide while off-duty on Saturday.
The death of Officer Howard Liebengood, 51-year-old, came as yet another hit to the Capitol Police Department that is since Wednesday events, under fire for allowing looters to swarm the Capitol amid an important session.
“He was assigned to the Senate Division, and has been with the Department since April 2005,” a statement read.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. We ask that his family and other USCP officers’ and their families’ privacy be respected during this profoundly difficult time.”
The veteran Capitol officer’s death is the second this week after the murder of Officer Brian Sicknick on the line of duty.
Sicknick was reportedly pepper-sprayed and bludgeoned to death with a fire extinguisher by rioters who attempted to force their way into the building.
