A Fort Bragg soldier who struggled with PTSD for years has fatally shot his pregnant wife and himself at their Fayetteville home on Sunday evening.
Staff Sgt. Keith Lewis spared his 3-year-old daughter’s life when he shot and killed his wife Sarah Lewis and himself just days before Sarah was expected to give birth to their fourth daughter, named Isabella.
“It’s a complete shock. It’s like a horror movie,” Sarah’s aunt Tammy De Mirza said adding that two years ago, the soldier had attempted to commit the murder-suicide.
“That time she was fortunate enough to get away, to go somewhere and call the police and get some help. By the time police came, Keith is sitting in the backyard with a rifle in his mouth ready to commit suicide.”
The aunt said that it was evident Keith suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder: “This guy had PTSD. From what I understand, he drank, and when he drank, he lost it.”
Keith died at the scene while his wife was transported to a hospital where she passed away along with the unborn baby.
Keith was a member of the Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.
