A 4.0 magnitude earthquake rocked Nevada on Wednesday in an area where the ground is slowly tearing apart.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck at 5:35 a.m. local time near Valmy, on top of the Basin and Range Province, 32 miles southeast of Beatty.

The region is subject to seismic activity and fault movement. The USGS forecasted a 30 percent chance that a 3.0 magnitude or higher earthquake would hit the area within the next week.
In March, the sparsely populated town experienced a swarm of tremors that reached a 4.0 magnitude.
