NJ gunman, 14, kills cop; critically wounds another

A 14-year-old gunman was charged with murder after he shot and killed an officer and critically wounded another in Newark, New Jersey, Friday evening.

The slain officer was just 25 years old, authorities said. The injured one is said to be “fighting for his life” at University Hospital.

  • What triggered the shooting that began at around 6:30 p.m. remains unclear. The boy allegedly fired 29 times at officers before he was shot by officers.

    Witnesses said the gunman was hanging out with a group of people at a fast food restaurant near the intersection of Carteret Street and Broadway before the gunfight.

    “This is a rapidly developing situation. Please pray for these officers, their families, and all our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to keep us safe,” Gov. Phil Murphy said.
