Alabama A&M declares injured football player still alive after announcing his passing

Hours after announcing that an injured football player has succumbed on Tuesday, Alabama A&M issued a statement that the linebacker is still alive, hospitalized in stable condition.

Medrick Burnett Jr. sustained a head injury in a game against Alabama State last month. He has since been at UAB Hospital.

On Tuesday evening, the school’s athletic department was informed by “an immediate family member” that Burnett has died.

The department “acted accordingly to the wishes of the family member” and informed the public.

  • The following day, the department learned from a hospital representative that the redshirt freshman was still alive.

    “We express our immediate regret for disseminating false information however, we hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition,” school officials said.

    The Lakewood, California player started at Grambling State University in Louisiana before transferring to Alabama A&M where he played seven games and made five tackles.
