A Maryland elementary school student is recovering after an “alleged” hanging incident that remains under investigation by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred Friday afternoon at C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School in Waldorf.
The second-grader’s parents said he suffered severe bruising on his face and neck after he was found hanging on a hook in a school bathroom.
School officials said that the incident occurred when one of two students who were “horseplaying” in the bathroom “got caught on a stall door hook” and “was not able to free themselves, and the other student involved was also not able to help them.”
The student’s parents cast doubt on the school officials’ statement requesting answers.
“[The principal] said before she got him down, he was foaming out the mouth, unconscious, and it was from horse playing…That doesn’t make sense to me,” the boy’s mother said.
“I want someone to be held accountable for what happened to our child.”
Charles County Public Schools Superintendent Maria Navarro denied claims that the district was “covering up” what happened.
“This is not true. Neither the principal nor the school system are hiding anything. Rather, we are sharing what information we can while we conduct a full investigation.”
