Former California track and field star dies suddenly weeks after graduating with master’s degree

A former California Polytechnic State University athlete died suddenly weeks after graduating with a master’s degree.

Shelby Daniele’s death was announced in an Instagram post on Thursday. Her cause of death remains unclear.

Tributes poured in for the “exceptional student-athlete” and “incredible leader.”

“Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community,” her team said.

    She is the record holder for the indoor 200-meter sprint and the second fastest in the indoor 60-meter dash and 100-meter sprint.

    “Shelby was a standout track athlete! No one will ever forget that day in May of 2019 when Shelby upset the field at the CA State Meet to win the 200-meter individual title, helping to secure the team win with her girls,” her former high school stated.

    “Shelby was a fantastic athlete, going on to Cal Poly to continue to break records in track, but she will be remembered by her teammates and coaches as an even more amazing person.”
